A regular bed might be too big of a change for your toddler or you don’t want to share a bed. A hiccapop inflatable toddler travel bed might be exactly what you are looking for!

In this review of the hiccapop toddler travel bed you’ll learn about all the great features and why you should consider this inflatable toddler mattress for your next trip.

As a military family of four we are often traveling. I also do a lot of traveling with a toddler alone when my husband is deployed or can’t get as much time off. Currently we are located in Yokosuka, Japan so that includes international and domestic travel as well as travel by train, planes, and car.

We also just added a second baby to our lives (2 under 2 is no joke!). So we needed two sleeping arrangements that wouldn’t be too difficult to bring while traveling, especially solo traveling with a baby and toddler. We wanted a toddler travel bed solution that could fit inside of a suitcase but that was also safe and comfortable for my 2.5 year old.

Like many toddlers, my son is such an active sleeper so I knew I needed something with bumpers or railings. We found that some beds had such a small thin mattress that I knew he would never sleep through the night in it.

After a lot of research we landed on the Hiccapop Inflatable Toddler Travel Bed with Safety Bumpers. We already have a few of their other products so we knew that they were a trustworthy brand and boy did it impress us!

hiccapop Infatable Toddler Bed Features

The hiccapop inflatable toddler travel bed is an inflatable mattress made for toddlers with safety bumpers on all four sides. It creates a safe place for your toddler to sleep while traveling.

  • Size of hiccapop inflatable bed: The dimensions of the hiccapop inflatable bed are 62 L x 39 W x 12 H inches. It has an inner inflatable mattress with dimensions of 49 L x 26 W (this would be the sleeping area for this inflatable toddler bed).

  • hiccapop saftey bumpers: On all four side of the hiccapop inflatable toddler bed is safety bumpers with extra long safety bumpers running along the sides.

  • Weight: The weight of the inflatable toddler bed is 8 lbs.

  • Weight limit: The hiccapop toddler bed weight limit is quite high at 310 lbs.

  • Included: Included with this portable toddler bed is a travel bag and an electric turbo pump.

  • Recommended age: 18 months and up

While those are the main features of the hiccapop inflatable toddler travel bed, it’s also key to know that it’s made of vinyl that is safety tested and free of any harmful materials. The vinyl is thick with reinforced seams and a leak-proof air valve. The inner mattress comes in 3 colors (Midnight Blue, Tahitian Blue or Slate Gray) and is velvet flocked.

In case of messes you can wipe down the hiccapop toddler air mattress with mild soap and water, but even better is that it can be covered with standard crib sheets (though we recommend choosing a stretchy material)

What we Loved Most About the hiccapop Toddler Bed (Pros)

Fast and Easy to Inflate or Deflate

With the included pump, the hiccapop blow up bed is quick and each to inflate!

How to Inflate the hiccapop toddler bed

The bed has a valve with two parts plus a cover. With both spouts in, you just put the pump in and inflate it! It has a leak-proof air valve so that you don’t lose a ton of air while trying to inflate the hiccapop kids air mattress. It also is quite quiet to inflate so that my son who is sensitive to loud sounds doesn’t have a hard time when it’s blowing up.

hiccapop electric turbo pump

With the turbo pump, it inflates very quickly. Hiccapop claims that the bed inflates in 30 seconds. I would say that is the time for each piece (there are a total of two pieces that need to be inflated separately).

Realistically, the set up time is around 3 minutes, including putting the sheet on. I think this is still very quick compared to other blow up mattresses on the market, which is important when you have two kids running around. This is also helpful when you get back late from a full day of sightseeing and need to get the babies to bed quickly!

Deflating the hiccapop inflatable toddler bed

With th quick release air valve, deflating it means just pulling the entire plug. It deflates very quickly without needing too much sitting on it to get all the air out. The air expels quickly and smoothly and then folds up really easily with the sheets still attached so that all the bedding is in one bag!

High Upper Weight Limit

A high upper weight limit was crucial for us! My son will not fall asleep without me next to him. At home he has a full size floor mattress so I can lay next to him so I wanted something that could mimic that. A familiar sleep environment is the best way to get a toddler to sleep on vacation!

The bed is wide enough that I can fit on it with him and it holds and supports my weight. This is also a unique feature as many of the blow up beds on the market tend to have weight limits around 150lbs.

Safety Bumpers on All Sides

As stated before, my son is an active sleeper. It is one of the reasons we don’t want to bedshare with him (hello kicks in the face in the middle of the night)! We couldn’t put him on a regular blow up mattress or a cot because he has fallen out of them, so the side safety bumpers on all sides of the bed are perfect for us.

Having safety bumpers on all four sides is only found on a few inflatable toddler beds and Hiccapop claims the bumpers are 25% taller and longer than their nearest competitor. I can claim that my son has yet to ‘fall’ off the mattress!

Removable Inner Mattress

The removable mattress allows us to use his crib sheets for comfort versus buying more linens. My son can use his comfy familiar bedding to make it more recognizable to home. We can also easily wash it if there are any diaper leaks or night time accidents.

Overall Size

We have used this bed all over the world, including our travels in Japan. As you may know, hotels in Japan are quite small so I would make sure the room you book is big enough to fit this bed because it is fairly large (62” X 39”X12”).

However in our travels through the United States we have had no problem fitting the bed next to ours. It has been easy to transport with me as a parent traveling alone with two young babies because it folds up easily into my suitcase and has been easy to set up on my own.

Unfortunately at this time, only my 2.5 year old can use the bed as the age limit suggests 18 months and up, but I could see them sharing the bed in the future to make things easier while traveling as the bed has that much space I think it could be shared. I have even fallen asleep on it while putting him to bed!

Easy to Fold and Pack

Once deflated the hiccapop inflatable toddler bed is easy to fold up back into the XL travel bag it came with. It also fits easily into a checked luggage bag.

What Could Be Improved (Cons)

There’s not much to be improved about this portable blow up mattress.

The only major issue is that the electric turbo pump (included) is not rated for international voltages. If you are traveling outside of the USA, then you are better off packing a foot pump. This will add to the time it takes to inflate it.

While it’s a great size overall, the total weight of 8 lbs does use up a decent amount of your 50 lbs weight limit if traveling by air. That’s not unique to this toddler travel bed, but just another consideration!

Comparing hiccapop to other Toddler Travel Beds

While we think the hiccapop inflatable bed is the best choice for parents who want to bring along a toddler travel bed, it’s worth comparing it to a couple of other leading toddler travel beds.

hiccapop vs Shrunks Inflatable Toddler Travel Bed

The hiccapop and the Shrunks inflatable toddler beds are both highly rated, popular blow up beds. The hiccapop has some improved features compared to the Shrunks toddler bed.

The key differences of the Shrunks vs hiccapop are the safety bumpers, overall size and weight capacity.

  • Size: outer dimensions: 62 x 39 x 12H inches / sleeping area dimensions: 49″ x 26″
  • Weight capacity: 310 lbs
  • Recommended age: 18 months +
  • Thickness: thicker vinyl at 0.4 mm
  • Safety bumpers: longer bed bumpers and two extra at top and bottom

Shrunks Toddler Travel Bed

  • Weight capacity: 150 lbs
  • Recommended age: 2 + years old
  • Thickness: vinyl is 0.3 mm thick
  • Safety bumpers: shorter bed bumpers plus no top or bottom

hiccapop vs KidCo PeaPod Plus Travel Tent

While an inflatable mattress is quite different than a toddler travel tent, they both make excellent toddler travel beds and are worth comparing.

The biggest differences are setup, ventilation, comfort and size.

Being The hiccapop inflatable bed is heavier but takes up less room in a suitcase. It also provides ample air flow and ventilation (unless you are using this toddler travel bed with a SlumberPod).

The KidCo PeaPod Plus Tent weighs much less and has the easiest setup – since you just need to remove it from the bag. You also don’t need to worry about it losing air in the night or having to carry an extra pump (either a foot pump or electric depending on where you travel).

An air mattress is going to be more comfortable than the KidCo PeaPod Plus which has only a thin mattress. However, the KidCo PeaPod can be used at 6 months vs 18 months for the hiccapop.

Other key differences are that while not all toddlers like the travel tent (read our review of the KidCo PeaPod to get tips on getting your toddler to like it), they can’t easily get out on their own.

  • Weight: 8 lbs
  • Size: outer dimensions: 62 x 39 x 12H inches / sleeping area dimensions: 49″ x 26″
  • Weight capacity: 310 lbs
  • Recommended age: 18 months +

KidCo PeadPod Toddler Tent

  • Weight: 3.5 lbs for PeaPod Plus
  • Size: sleep surface – 52.5 x 34W inches / folded 19 x 19 x 3.5 inches
  • Weight capacity: no upper weight limit
  • Recommended age: 6 months to 5 years old

Final Thoughts on hiccapop Inflatable Toddler Travel Bed with Safety Bumpers

Overall, for the price we think the hiccapop kids air mattress is a great product to use. My son continues to sleep through the night and enjoys having his own ‘big boy’ bed compared to him fitting into a travel crib (that he has surely grown out of).

It gives him more autonomy and allows him to have blankets and his ‘stuffies’, plus he’s familiar with it so it helps our toddler sleep on vacation. It is a safe option for sleep when they may be too big for the travel crib but too small for a regular off the ground bed. Hiccapop claims it is the ‘safest’ inflatable toddler travel bed on the market.

With the thick vinyl, 40%  thicker than most travel beds, the quality is amazing. We have used this bed every day for over a month and it still is in great shape. If you run into a problem the bed comes with a patch for a quick fix and also has a ‘lifetime guarantee’.

We love this bed and will definitely continue to use it on our travels with a toddler!
